In class, we have nearly finished our animal stories. This is incredible as we have worked really hard on them.
Before you know more about the animal stories themselves, you should know more about why we are writing them On thursday, November 7th, 2013, we met Jeff Kinney, the author of the world famous book Diary Of A Wimpy Kid series. Jeff Kinney was speaking was speaking and signing books at YELLOW BOOK ROAD, which is a small book shop in Liberty Station ( where our school is). He said many things that stuck in our minds but one thing really got us wondering. HE LOVES INDEPENDENT BOOK STORES!
We interviewed Ms. Ann, the owner of Yellow Book Road to find out more about the strengths and challenges of independent bookstores. She told us that the toughest months for the store were in January and February so we decided that we wanted to help.
Our class loves animals and we figured that if we loved them so much, other kids probably did too. We decided to make animal book boxes to hold books from the store in as well as a special book of animal stories written by us!
We have worked really hard creating these wonderful stories. First we read two animal stories by Jill Tomlinson to see how an animal story could work. Then we each chose an animal that we loved (our visit to the Safari Park helped us with this too).
In the library, we studied a lot of facts on our animal. After that, we planned and wrote our stories. When we were done, Ms. Chown helped us learn how to make the reader really feel like they are in the world of our story, by writing detailed character and setting descriptions. In order to learn from the experts, we read lots of different setting and character descriptions from books and magpied what we liked. We even watched the beginnings of some Disney movies to help us with this!
Writing our stories has been hard but we're writing and working our best. We've also learned about new facts and new things, so we are feeling very proud.
