Our finished scarecrow in his finery.
For the past two weeks we (Room 15) have been sewing and hot gluing on (white) buttons to a jacket and pants for the fall festival scarecrow. The sewing process was HARD, you go through poking your self with the needle to sewing the jacket or pants together and having to restart the whole process (Nooooooooo)! We worked outside of the classroom with parents and grand
In class we read a story about the Pearly kings and Queens. We learned that they were poor and were fed-up of the rich walking around and showing off their pearls.
They decided to collect the buttons they found on the street. After a long time, they collected a ton of buttons and were able to sew them on their clothes and they looked like pearls from a distance (Awesome).

Button designs close up. Some are glued and some are sewn.
Different symbols, made out of buttons, mean different things, for example…
Horse shoe = Luck
Doves = Peace
Heart = Charity
Anchor = Hope
Cross = Faith
Wheel = Circle of life
Symbols of playing cards = Life is a gamble
Flower pots = Costermongers
Donkey carts = Costermongers
Thank you for reading the story of the Pearly kings and Queens. We hope you understand the story of our scarecrow a little better!
