After science, we had our morning meeting. It was at the meeting that we learnt that we are really making progress at the protocols that help our class run smoothly. We feel proud about the fact that we are able to get into line in 10 seconds, walk silently and quickly down the hallways and stop super fast when we hear the chime. Ms Chown was amazed! Now we won’t waste any time and will have more time available for us to spend on the things that are really interesting in class.
One of the eyes that we drew this afternoon. Today we started with science. We completed a scavenger hunt of the science room in order to get to know everything (and every animal) that is in there. In fact, we had to touch the animals! The highlight of the class was meeting the new hamster called Sally Ride. We all stroked her and realized that hamsters are incredibly fluffy! Now we won’t waste any time and will have more time available for us to spend on the things that are really interesting in class. After recess, we read the story of Baby Brains. This is an English book that Ms. Chown loves. It was really funny because it is about a baby who is incredibly mature and smart (his first words are “Can I go to school tomorrow,”). We loved this story although we had a few suggestions for the author. We wished that the story didn’t move so quickly from one event to the next as we wanted to hear more details about how the baby became a doctor, then an astronaut etc. Ms. Chown suggested that we fill in the gaps for ourselves and maybe write our own Baby Brains story and some of us are thinking about doing this. As well as discussing what we liked and disliked, we had loads of unanswered questions about the book. We wondered about whether Baby Brains’ parents wanted him to go into space, what the other astronauts thought about a baby going with them on their space mission, and how he got so smart in the first place. A Quentin Blake illustration Finding parallels in the books we read is a pretty tough thinking skill but nothing is too hard for Room 15. Some of us made the connection between Baby Brains missing his mom and how we miss our own families who are in different parts of the country. Others thought that the illustrations were similar to Quentin Blake’s illustrations in Roald Dahl books and someone remembered that there is a Baby Genius book in the library. We are going to try to find the book to see if the stories are similar. Then in the afternoon, we started to make the self portraits that we are going to put on this website. These will show the world what our class looks like and how we do beautiful work. When Ms. Chown told us that we were going to spend 45 minutes, just drawing one eye, we were shocked. How would we spend that long on one drawing? Also, we thought is might be hard because we had to make the picture really big, so we had enough room for all the details we noticed. Well, it turned out that we learnt a lot about our appearance and we were very pleasantly surprised by how realistic our pictures looked by the end of the session. In fact, some of us still need more time to work on our eyes to get all the details completed. Several of us thought that these were the best drawings we have ever done! Just to let you know, I'll be putting all the photos that I took of the eyes up over the next few days. I have a meeting now, so I won't be able to upload them tonight. If parents or friends want to pop by and have a look before these get put on the site, we'd love to share our work with you.

Hi Olivia, when I did these before, my favorite part has been watching my class realize that if they look at something carefully enough and really spend time looking and adjusting and drawing little bit by little bit, then they can create something stunning. I REALLY love it when people realise that this doesn't just apply to art but to everything we learn about.

A few years ago (when I was teaching the children in the painted portraits), I set up a blog for my class at the end of the year. Ever since then, I have wanted to have a class blog to talk about a) who our class is and b) our learning.

It's one of my favorites too. Do you think you might want to write a Baby Brains story, to add in more details about his life?
