By the Great Horn Spoon is a book about the 1849 California gold rush. We have been sailing through it with the Lady Wilma.
When we started reading it it was really good. It is an intense, exciting and funny story that still has all of us on our toes. Jack is the main character of the book Jack left to make it rich so he can save his aunt and sister. He is an 11 year old boy who is desperate to find gold. He is currently on a half a year long boat ride from Boston to San Francisco with his proper butler Praiseworthy (who always call Jack “Master Jack!”). And a captain that always says “By Grabs.”
We are reading this book because we studied the gold rush for a long time and had an amazing trip to a gold mine in Julian to learn how to pan for gold, sluice, use the rocker boxes and make candles! It was also really fun because we got to ride on a school bus there and we almost got to throw tomahawks. the things we found was Gold, Iron pyrite, Quartz, Gems and crystals.
In the book we just found out that the the Lady Wilma has taken the most dangerous way to get to the Pacific Ocean (it’s where boats get cracked into two and get crushed). When they were near the equator everybody took of their shirts and shoes but when they got close to the arctic the skinny people looked like fat people and the fat people looked like humongous people. At the end the Lady Wilma got to the Pacific Ocean the Sea Raven was behind the boat it was a victory for all but something terrible after that happened. But I not gonna tell you because you've gotta read the book!
