Cabrillo was the first European to discover San Diego. I have to admit it, that it is hard to say his name, so here is how to actually say his name Ca-bre-o. It is Spanish, so you might say it Ca-brill-o but the L’s stand for E. We are learning about Cabrillo because he was an adventurer and we are doing an adventure project in class called Adventure, Adventure, Arrghh! We get to go on a lot of adventures. So far we have gone on two adventures or what we call field work. This helps us to put our learning about adventures into action. We have been studying Cabrillo and doing lots of stuff to help us discover more. Like today we made lists of the things we noticed about the pictures we were given. Everything we noticed, we had to make theories about. The day before, each table group had noticed as many things as we could in each picture. This got us ready to make the theories the next day. We each had four pictures, two of them were statues and two of them were paintings. The two painting were very different. In one of the paintings, Cabrillo had curly hair, a beard, and a mustache. Cabrillo was born in Portugal. He sailed to New Spain (Mexico). He took off and landed in San Diego Bay! Later in the day we read an article about him. Each pair had a different part of the article to read. We had to take notes on what we learned and then explain our section to the rest of our group. This helped us to understand the whole article, even though we only read one section of it. I think this is a great project because we get to learn about new things, especially Cabrillo! I also think other schools should do this project because it is so fun!!! Although we learned some things about Cabrillo that we didn't like, Cabrillo is a hero to me and others. We hope to learn and share more about him soon. By Emily |

In library we read and sometimes we talk about books but it is also a really good place to finish your work. It is really fun going to the library because you get to see Ms. Megan and you can get books but you have to return it or you can renew it.
In our classroom, the books we are reading are books about adventures. This is because our project is all about adventures. By Leila The Song of Spheres is a song from Odysseus. It is a song that the sirens sing that makes you lose all memory except for the desire to hear more! In order to hear more about what the sounds might be like, we made all the noises with our mouths like an acapella group. Here are some of the sounds that Odysseus heard:
*This was one that we added! By Dulce and Annia This week we read some more of our class story called Odysseus. We are reading this book to learn more about greek myths. One of the chapters that we read was called The Song of the Spheres. Before reading this chapter, we were a bit scared. We knew what sirens were. Sirens sing a song so make you go in sort of a trance and you steer your boat into the the jagged rocks near their home. How Odysseus described the song was, the beating of a swan’s wings, the hiss and drag of the sea on the sand, the moan of the wind, the rhythm of the passing seasons, and his wife singing to him. Then we re-created the song. After that we wrote our own poems filled with sounds that would have a dramatic effect on us. Some examples are…(these are Ella's) - The low hum of a clarinet warming up in an orchestra - The gentle flap of a mail carrying owl taking off from Hogwarts, (From Harry Potter) Ian also wrote a poem. When he got to the end of his poem, he challenged himself to write another few lines. Then he challenged himself to write a few more. Suddenly, his brain exploded and he wrote and wrote until he had a whole page written. He was really proud. Here are his six favorite lines: - The rattle of a rattlesnake. - The croak of a frog - the tree leaves gently hitting each other - waves crashing into jagged rocks - the sound of me slurping the last drop of icy cold lemonade (with a straw) - the sound of my mom closing her sunglasses after a walk in the park on a long day. A few days ago we had art. In art we did square one art. Square one art is when you draw something it can really be anything.
Once you draw your picture you can buy mugs, notebooks, necklaces and lots of stuff but the cool thing about square one art is that your picture that you drew will be on the stuff that you got. Isn't that cool? Our whole class did an amazing job on the drawings it is so much fun drawing the picture. Now this is how we started drawing. First we did a rough draft then then moved on to our final drafts. When I was on my final draft I didn't like how it looked. Then out of nowhere our art teacher Ms. Tasi took out these light tracers so the I could trace my rough draft on my final draft paper. And I loved how it looked. I was so happy. But I still wasn't done because I needed to draw my background but it was time to leave the art room. So I put down my pencil and eraser and said good bye to Ms. Tasi, the art teacher, and walked out of the art room with the rest of the class and everyone was calm this was definitely one of my favorite art classes yet. It was Wednesday and Wednesday is a half day so we went outside to eat lunch. In art this week, I learned to always keep trying. By Ale This week our school's PE teacher was absent. So Ms.Chown (our teacher) took us out for PE,we played three games.
The first game was called stuck in the mud it is there are three people that are it. They are trying to tag people who are not it - so if you are tagged, you stand with your arms and legs out. This shows that you are stuck in the mud. So, how you get out of the mud is someone has to crawl under your legs then you are free from mud. The next game is called groups. It is where the teacher calls two numbers for example: five-three. That means that five girls and three boys or five boys and three girls get together in a group and sit down and if you don’t have a group then you are out. But don't worry if you are out - the next game will start soon. The last game we played was called the fastest kid in the West. It is where everyone is it and if you get tagged you have to go stand at the edge of the black top. The last kid or grown up standing wins. What I thought about the games was they were really fun. "I felt super good when I started playing the games." "I feel great but I'm sore." We both learned new games. By: Mikaila and Addison “Question 3? No...” I thought as I walked to another envelope. I read, “no thats not it”. I searched all over the room. I could not find it. A really hard case for private eye Seth...
Now I totally know what you are thinking. I'll explain. So we were going into the classroom and I was tardy because of a dentist appointment so I didn't know anything about what the class was doing. Then Mrs.Chown explained. There were envelopes all over the room with math challenges in them. You had to find them and pull a math sheet out of them. But they all had numbers on them. So one envelope was labeled Guess My Number 2 or 3 or 1 and so on until 5. You glued the math papers on some construction paper and you solved them with your friend. As you can see I was looking for number 1. I couldn't find it. So I picked Guess my number 2 and I read. It said:
I solved another then another and another. They were all really fun! I think I like this activity! It was fun because of how you had to find the envelopes then you had to do the math problem. Solving the math problem helped us to improve with place value but also with lots of other types of math - because it asked us to do so many things. Both of us (Seth and Anelisa) think that the activity was really fun. Anelisa thinks that she learned that math could be really fun sometimes! By Anelisa and Seth This week we started doing a new form of math for us, it was called Exemplars. Exemplars are questions for us to answer. Unlike some math, there aren't a lot of questions. There is only one - but it needs a lot of math to answer it. Luckily, all the math we have been doing was the math that we needed to answer the problem.
The exemplars question that we did was called The Computer Game. The question told us that there were three rounds. Two people had been playing a computer game. Their names were Jaci and Emma. In order to work out how many points they had scored, we had to read the expanded numbers and write it in regular numbers. Also we had to figure out who had the most points in each round. The question for the first problem said Jaci has seventy-four thousand, two hundred and sixteen points, Emma had seventy thousand, four hundred and eighty nine points. So that means Jaci won the first round. At the end of the second round Jaci had fifty two thousand two hundred thirty one points. Emma had fifty two thousand and sixty eight points. Once again Jaci won. The last but not least round Jaci had sixty two thousand nine hundred seventy nine points. Emma had sixty two thousand nine hundred eighty four points so that means Emma had won. First when I saw it I thought that it was going to be impossible. A lot of other people probably thought that too but I didn't think it was that hard. I felt like this activity was really fun but we still learned at the same time. After I did the exemplars problem, I feel more confident with my math. I learned a lot about numbers & I can solve a lot more stuff with numbers in it. By: Ivan
In morning meeting we have been learning some new games. The games we play are: steal the keys, winked "murder", and follow the leader. We felt so great when we played the games and we still feel great just thinking about them!
Playing the games helps us to learn about each other, they help us to listen and they help us to stay focused! By Halle and Soleil |
