Cabrillo was the first European to discover San Diego. I have to admit it, that it is hard to say his name, so here is how to actually say his name Ca-bre-o. It is Spanish, so you might say it Ca-brill-o but the L’s stand for E. We are learning about Cabrillo because he was an adventurer and we are doing an adventure project in class called Adventure, Adventure, Arrghh! We get to go on a lot of adventures. So far we have gone on two adventures or what we call field work. This helps us to put our learning about adventures into action. We have been studying Cabrillo and doing lots of stuff to help us discover more. Like today we made lists of the things we noticed about the pictures we were given. Everything we noticed, we had to make theories about. The day before, each table group had noticed as many things as we could in each picture. This got us ready to make the theories the next day. We each had four pictures, two of them were statues and two of them were paintings. The two painting were very different. In one of the paintings, Cabrillo had curly hair, a beard, and a mustache. Cabrillo was born in Portugal. He sailed to New Spain (Mexico). He took off and landed in San Diego Bay! Later in the day we read an article about him. Each pair had a different part of the article to read. We had to take notes on what we learned and then explain our section to the rest of our group. This helped us to understand the whole article, even though we only read one section of it. I think this is a great project because we get to learn about new things, especially Cabrillo! I also think other schools should do this project because it is so fun!!! Although we learned some things about Cabrillo that we didn't like, Cabrillo is a hero to me and others. We hope to learn and share more about him soon. By Emily |
