One of our first projects has been creating self portraits to decorate our classroom. I love to work on self portraits at the beginning of the year as it is a great way of getting to know each other and ourselves. Looking closely at things we thought were familiar and discovering new and more detailed observations, is a really important 4th grade skill. I think we have all been amazed at how many new things we have noticed about our faces, hair, neck and shoulders as we have been drawing. We have also learned to work in a new medium - chalk pastels. Here are the first 12 portraits. I will post up the rest as we finish them.

Here are some self portraits that my old classes made. I always like to see examples before I start working, so I thought you might too.
