The objective is to get the other teams flags, if you do that YOU WIN. So it's a really fun game. Try it, it's fun. Here is some people that agree with me: Ethan was happy, Audrey had fun, Isaac was happy, Allan was was happy too.

At W.U.S.U.we played capture the flag. HOW DO YOU PLAY CAPTURE THE FLAG? First you put on a yellow\red belt with little flags. And you need to pull those flags. If you get pulled you go to the other teams jail until someone from the other team tags you. There's two teams against each other and both teams need to have 3 flags on each side.

You'll notice that this week there are lots of blog posts about work that we are doing for our local bookstore - Yellow Book Road. This is because we are in the middle of a project about how we can help the bookstore. This blog post is all about the animals that we are making to decorate the book boxes that we are making to go in the store.
We are helping Yellow book Road because they do so much for local schools and kids - from organizing author talks to giving us expert advice when we go in there. They have even agreed to let us sell a book that we are writing in the store! They are so nice that they even gave us books to read when we went to interview them about being an independent bookstore. On a tuesday afternoon, after lunch, we saw a ton of newspaper and we didn’t know what was going on! When everyone got to the rug, Ms. Chown told us we were doing our first draft of our animal models, everyone shouted with joy. Finally! We have been looking forward to this since we designed the project. "I was feeling glad about doing out doing our models ever since Ms. Chown told us about it." "Hi my name is Grady and the person that was before me was Garrett. When Ms Chown told me that we would be starting on the models, I was super happy and excited because I have been waiting for this for a couple months while we wrote our stories." After everyone stopped yelling with joy we started. If someone had the same animal as us we could work together. Garrett and I both had chosen snakes to write about so we decided to work together. Our snakes are not the same species but we still did it together - it was very fun. First Garrett and I decided a plan for our work. I would get the tape and Garrett would roll the newspaper and we both would shape the body. We also had pictures so that we could look at the picture and see what the body and head looked like. But some people had animals that had legs so they had even more things to think about! As well as making animal book boxes, we have also written book reviews to go in Yellow Book Road. You can read about this in the blog post below by Katherine and Emilia. We have also been writing animal stories to go with our animal models. You can read about this in another blog post (by Thaison and Quinn). Ms. Ann, the store owner of the store gave us critique on our book reviews but she hasn't seen our stories yet! ETHAN: How is school? Did you do anything exciting?
AUDREY: Yes I did. We did something called the “Jog-A-Thon.” ETHAN: Cool. What is the “Jog-A-Thon?” AUDREY: A Jog-A-Thon is Explorer Elementary’s fundraiser for the school. All the kids run laps around a track on a grassy field. We all get sponsors who pay the school for how many laps we run. We want to raise money so we can use the money for getting resources. ETHAN: Ok. How many laps did you run? AUDREY: 36 laps. It was hard. ETHAN: Let me try! 2 hours later… ETHAN: I’m back! I ran 51 laps! (That last part was true! Though I ran that at the Jog-A-Thon*.) It was hard. I can barely move. How many laps did your friends run? AUDREY: My friend Andrew ran 40 laps, Eleri ran 38 laps and Grady ran 57! ETHAN: Wow!!! Your friends are really fast runners! 57, that’s amazing!!!! AUDREY: Did you know that every 10 laps is a mile!?! ETHAN: WOW!! The track must be big! How do people feel about the “Jog-A-Thon?” AUDREY: Well, let me tell you: Quinn felt tremendous, Emilia felt like she really achieved her goal. (37 laps), Cayden felt like he could improve and get even more laps next time. Bjorg achieved her goal. (23 laps) But she was very sore! Jacob also felt like he achieved his goal like Emilia. ETHAN: Wow! So many different opinions! AUDREY: Here are some more peoples opinions. Isaac and Allan felt tired. Grady felt really happy and sore. Ms. Chown (our teacher) felt glad to see all the kids she knew from our class and from different classes. She also loved getting out of the classroom into the sunshine. ETHAN: I’m so glad people feel good about the “Jog-A-Thon!” And for Cayden, “You did really well but I love how you are challenging yourself. I hope you achieve your target next year!” AUDREY: Here are one word expressions: Tired! Sore! OK! EPIC! ETHAN: I would love to talk more, but I’ve gotta run! BYE! BYE! AUDREY: Ok! Bye! Run by you later. * All the laps were true in this blog By: Ethan and Audrey This month we made a goal for our class which is to read three books in January. The very thought of this challenge made some people feel scared and others feel excited. Ms. Chown made us feel a bit better when she told us that any book over 220 pages would count as two books.
Since the challenge began, our class has got engaged with many stories we are reading in class and at home. In fact, Some people achieved this goal before Ms.Chown gave it to us. She told us that we needed to read even more (and see how many books we could read) so almost everyone is reading A LOT at home. These are how kids in our class are now feeling about this amazing book challenge. Quinn explained that she was “elated,” Thaison and Eleri said “spectacular,” Delanie said “incredible,” Sergio said “great.” So start reading!!! By Sara and ? It all started friday the18th at 8:30 in the morning. While outside was getting set up two people came up with silly names one was Mother meerkat and the other was Dr. zoolittle.
First they came up and talked about animals in the San Diego Zoo. Then they brought out the animals. The first animals were birds: one was Cranberry and the other one was Raspberry. They talked about Cranberry and Raspberry and how their chests are red. Then they brought out a snake a few people got to pet it and we found out what it ate. After we saw the snake we got to have some real fun outside. We did a recycling race, and made a paper planter project where we took recycled paper and seeds that were in the paper to make a seed planter. We also did other activities and also learned about recycling and stuff. You can read about one of these activities in Bjorg's blog post below. That day was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much fun. By Delanie and ? It has been a while since we have updated you on art.
Nothing big happened in that massive stretch of time (because some of it was winter break). However, a few weeks ago, we started GIANT FOAM CREATURES. This project goes with our Burlap Paintings that we made a few weeks ago. Some people paired up to work on theirs together. My brother, Ethan, my blog partner Jonathan, and I all grouped up. Our first idea was a Tech Dragon. We have NO idea how a Tech Dragon, merged into the Titan lord, Kronos. We guess that maybe we thought the horns on it kind of looked like Kronos. We found another problem: Kronos doesn't have wings. So, we settled on the Evolve-Form of Kronos. Before we changed the name, we had a lot of material problems. We didn't have enough material. so at that point, we started salvaging. The next week, Ms. Tasi (the art teacher) gave every kid in the class more material. That was when we changed the name. Art is super fun every week, and all the kids enjoy it a lot. You can come in to the art room, and find kids having so much fun. Here is a wonderful interview from, the magnificent, Jonathan! (Andrew) How do you like art? (Jonathan) I think art is SO AWESOME! (Andrew) Do you like Ms. Tasi's projects? (Jonathan) YES!!! We both have made a connection with Ms. Tasi. Art ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!! ~by~ Andrew and Jonathan In class, we have nearly finished our animal stories. This is incredible as we have worked really hard on them.
Before you know more about the animal stories themselves, you should know more about why we are writing them On thursday, November 7th, 2013, we met Jeff Kinney, the author of the world famous book Diary Of A Wimpy Kid series. Jeff Kinney was speaking was speaking and signing books at YELLOW BOOK ROAD, which is a small book shop in Liberty Station ( where our school is). He said many things that stuck in our minds but one thing really got us wondering. HE LOVES INDEPENDENT BOOK STORES! We interviewed Ms. Ann, the owner of Yellow Book Road to find out more about the strengths and challenges of independent bookstores. She told us that the toughest months for the store were in January and February so we decided that we wanted to help. Our class loves animals and we figured that if we loved them so much, other kids probably did too. We decided to make animal book boxes to hold books from the store in as well as a special book of animal stories written by us! We have worked really hard creating these wonderful stories. First we read two animal stories by Jill Tomlinson to see how an animal story could work. Then we each chose an animal that we loved (our visit to the Safari Park helped us with this too). In the library, we studied a lot of facts on our animal. After that, we planned and wrote our stories. When we were done, Ms. Chown helped us learn how to make the reader really feel like they are in the world of our story, by writing detailed character and setting descriptions. In order to learn from the experts, we read lots of different setting and character descriptions from books and magpied what we liked. We even watched the beginnings of some Disney movies to help us with this! Writing our stories has been hard but we're writing and working our best. We've also learned about new facts and new things, so we are feeling very proud. By Thaison and Quinn Hey, it's Katherine & Emilia here to tell you about our book reviews that we are going to give to Yellow Book Road (a local independent book store.)
Let's start by telling you a little bit about our project called ''The Yellow Book Road Project.'' This project started when we went to see Jeff Kinney (the author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series speak at Yellow Book Road. He said that he loved independent bookstores so we decided to find out what this meant. It turns out that independent bookstores are run and generally owned by people in the community. They might have less books in them than the big bookstores, but they have more freedom. For example, Yellow Book Road has agreed to see our book! But back to the book reviews. One of the things that we are doing to help Yellow Book Road is writing book reviews for their shelves. These reviews will help their customers select perfect books. Because we wanted to do this well, the first thing we looked at were some professional book reviews. We did this to see what we should include in our reviews. We noticed exaggerated vocabulary, age range, one or two sentence summary of the book, who the main character is and what type of book it is (eg funny or sad). Speaking of exaggerated vocabulary, we made a list of the words we could use to help us when we are stuck. Why not stop by our classroom and have a look at our "We love books" wall to see the list for yourself? We (Katherine and Emilia) really like doing book reviews. Here are some opinions on the project from our classmates: Sara / Cayden- it is lots of fun, people are going to be coming into Yellow Book Road and seeing our book reviews! Thaison/Quinn - we liked writing the book reviews but we love the fact that we can write our own stories too! You can read about this in our blog post! By Katherine and Emilia On January 24th we did Science with Ms. Borden, but we usually do science with Ms. Hutchins . It felt good with someone new but we hope that Ms. Hutchins is okay.
We looked at rocks while she made chocolate mixed with marshmallows we looked at at obsidian, pumice, gravel and bauxite. We had to write all about the rocks and where they came from. We sat down on the rug to get ready to eat chocolate marshmallows. She called on me to get chocolate marshmallows. It was sweet and good. We had super duper blast! BY YOUR ONE AND ONLY Allan & Isaac = smiley face =) The grandparents/special friends day was, how should I say this…
...AWESOME! One thing that we did was pretended to have a magic box and we wrote what we thought was in the the box, what it was made out of, and what we would do in it (see Nora and Sophia's blog post below). Then we actually made a box. We made the box by using a net on card stock paper. We could make a triangular pyramid box, a cube box, different prisms and many, many more. First, we cut out the black lines and then folded along the dotted lines, and then glued the shaded lines and viola! We had made our box. Here is what some people in our class thought about making the boxes.
